Fourth, you need model quality and performance standards. Before an AI system touches customers or critical processes, someone must define what good looks like. What level of accuracy is acceptable? What constitutes a harmful or biased output? How will performance be monitored over time? How will you sunset or retrain models when they drift?


Fifth, there must be human oversight. AI governance does not mean humans step away. It means they are in the right place in the loop. High-risk uses should have human review, escalation paths, and override capabilities. The organization should be clear about which decisions AI can take autonomously and which require human confirmation.


Finally, auditability is non-negotiable. You need a record of what models were used, what they accessed, how they behaved, and how decisions were made. That record becomes critical if a regulator asks questions, a customer challenges a decision, or the board wants assurance that AI is operating within your stated risk appetite.

 

Questions every CEO should ask before deploying business AI solutions

Before you approve a major AI initiative, there are several questions worth asking in plain language.


  • What data will this system have access to, and where will that data physically reside?

  • Is any of this data sensitive, regulated, or covered by contractual obligations with customers or partners?

  • Are we using a public model, a third-party service, or a private AI environment that we control?

  • Who on the executive team is accountable if something goes wrong with this AI deployment?

  • How will we monitor the outputs for errors, bias, and drift over time, not just during launch?

  • Do we have a clear policy for employees about what they can and cannot do with AI tools?

  • If a customer, regulator, or partner asked us to explain how this AI influenced a specific decision, could we provide a transparent answer?

  • Are we prepared to shut down or roll back this system quickly if we discover a problem?


It is not enough for someone to say yes in general terms. You should insist on specific evidence and a concrete plan. When the answers are vague, governance is usually weak.

 

The new reality of shadow AI in the enterprise

Even if you have not formally deployed AI, your company is almost certainly using it. Employees are already experimenting with public tools, browser extensions, and software they downloaded without approval. Vendors are quietly integrating AI into their products. Departments may be paying for AI features on corporate cards.


This phenomenon is often called shadow AI. It is the AI version of shadow IT. It exists outside official structures, security reviews, and governance frameworks.
